Helen Frankenthaler was an influential American Abstract Expressionist painter and a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. She pioneered the 'soak-stain' technique, which involved thinning paint with turpentine to allow it to seep into unprimed canvas. Her innovative approach was pivotal in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting.
