César Baldaccini, better known as César, was a prominent French sculptor and a founding member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. He gained international fame for his 'Compressions' of automobiles, 'Expansions' of polyurethane foam, and large-scale representations of human body parts, such as 'Le Pouce' (The Thumb). He also designed the trophy for the French film industry's César Awards.
