Born in Saïda, Algeria, Jean-Michel Alberola is a major figure in French contemporary art. Associated with the 'Figuration Libre' movement in the 1980s, his work is protean, moving between abstraction, figuration, and conceptualism to explore philosophical and social themes. He was a long-time professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris.
