Born in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, Chen Wenling is a leading figure in contemporary Chinese sculpture. He is famous for his 'Red Memory' series featuring laughing, naked figures and his surreal, often grotesque works that critique consumerism and materialism in modern China. He received the Golden Lion award at the 1999 Venice Biennale.
