Born in Handan, Hebei Province, Fang Lijun is a pioneer of the 'Cynical Realism' movement that emerged in China in the early 1990s. His work frequently features bald-headed figures in various states of apathy or frustration, symbolizing the disillusionment of the post-1989 generation. He studied printmaking at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
