Born in Beijing as Liu Ji Xian, Ah Xian moved to Australia in 1989 following the events of Tiananmen Square. He is renowned for his sculptural practice that bridges Chinese cultural heritage and Western artistic traditions, notably through his 'China, China' series of porcelain busts decorated with traditional motifs. He was the winner of the inaugural National Sculpture Prize at the National Gallery of Australia in 2001.
