Lorna Simpson rose to prominence in the 1980s with photo-text installations that challenge traditional representations of race, gender, and identity. Her multidisciplinary practice includes film, video, and sculpture, often focusing on the experiences of African American women. She was one of the first African American women to exhibit at the Venice Biennale.
